8 warmest sustainable sweaters

From all over the world

Recycled wool or cashmere is probably the best alternative to conventional wool (if we exclude other fabrics entirely).

Recycled wool involves reusing old wool garments and turning them into new products. Doing so diverts used wool fabrics from the landfill, reducing land use. In addition, it minimizes the use of chemicals and doesn’t contribute as much to environmental pollution.

Compared to virgin wool, producing one kilogram of recycled wool helps save 11 kg of CO2 and 500 liters of water. Recycling wool also does not cause any ethical issues because no animal is harmed or treated poorly in the process.

There are several certification labels you can look for if you want to make sure that you are purchasing recycled wool, the most famous one being the Global Recycled Standard.

Below you'll find a selection of cool jumpers made from recycled wool or cashmere.

Another Tomorrow

The loose fit and dropped shoulders convey an air of ease. Engineered stitch details at the sleeves and along the body elevate are points of visual interest in this classic silhouette.
Brand’s Global Recycle Standard (GRS) Certified supplier has crafted this material from both pre- and post-consumer recycled cashmere.

This cashmere retains the soft and warm qualities of virgin cashmere. The cashmere is a mix of pre and post consumer recycled materials sourced all from within Italy.

The fabric supplier is Global Recycling Standard Certified. This means that site is third party audited for social and environmental standards and the materials are certified as recycled.

The production impact of virgin cashmere is extremely harmful to planet and people. Between 1999 and 2019, the number of cashmere goats in Mongolia increased almost fourfold from seven million to 27 million. The rearing of these goats has led to extreme overgrazing and desertification, severely threatening local communities and natural environments. The goat’s sharp hooves break through topsoil and their eating habits - ripping up plants from their roots - make it impossible for grasslands to survive.
