How do the sustainable goals link to the fashion industry?

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 goals, that represent a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires the partnership of governments, companies and citizens alike, to make sure that we leave a better planet for future generations. The fashion industry covers many of the 17 goals.
SDG 1
is to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.”
It is one of the fundamental goals of the international community and of the entire United Nations (UN) system.
The problems:

SDG 5

on gender equality

Approximately between 60 and 75 million people work directly in the fashion and textiles industry and around 70 to 80% are women. Many are subject to exploitation and verbal and physical abuse. They often work in unsafe conditions, without basic healthcare and with very little pay.
The problems:
SDG 8
aims to “promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all”.

Decent work puts people at the heart of the development agenda and drives sustainable development.
The problems:
Two of the SDGs focus specifically on water:
SDG 6 aims to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”
SDG 14 aims to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
The problems:
SDG 13:
climate action

The problems:
SDG 12:
responsible consumption and production.

SGD 12 is particularly relevant as it commits to ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. Overall clothing consumption is projected to more than double by 2030 and currently 80 percent of all clothing produced ends up being either incinerated or ends up in landfill. So each of the SDGs has different targets and target eight of SDG 12 addresses the consumer’s right to be informed in order to become better aware of sustainable development issues.

The problems:
SDG 15
aims to conserve and restore ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, drylands and mountains by 2030.
